Cannabis Concentrates 101: Beginner's Guide Johannesburg

By Green Vault Editorial Team · Published 2026-10-27

What Are Cannabis Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are products made by extracting the most potent compounds from the cannabis plant — primarily THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) — resulting in a product far more concentrated than raw flower. Where a quality cannabis flower might test at 20–30% THC, concentrates can reach 70–90% or higher.

For beginners, this matters for one reason above all others: potency demands respect. Concentrates are not for casual, unthinking use. They're for informed adults who understand what they're consuming, how much, and why. This guide will help you get there.

The South African Legal Context

In 2018, the Constitutional Court decriminalised the private use and cultivation of cannabis by adults. The Cannabis for Private Purposes Act, signed in 2024, further formalised aspects of this decriminalisation. However, the commercial cannabis market in South Africa remains under active regulatory development.

Important: The legal landscape is still evolving. Do not assume that all forms of purchase, sale, or possession are fully lawful. Verify current regulations through official government sources before buying or using any cannabis product. Green Vault operates as a licensed online store for adults 18 and older. Age verification is required at checkout.

Types of Cannabis Concentrates Explained

Not all concentrates are the same. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the main types you'll encounter on a quality menu:

Vape Cartridges and Disposables

These are the most beginner-friendly concentrate format. Pre-filled with extracted THC oil, they attach to a battery or come as disposable all-in-one units. Onset is fast — typically within minutes — and dosing is relatively controllable compared to edibles.

Liquid Diamond Vapes represent a premium tier. The extraction process preserves more of the plant's natural terpenes, resulting in richer flavour profiles. The Bhang Bar 2g Liquid Diamond Vape range — available in strains like Watermelon Zkittles (Sativa), Black Cherry Gelato (Indica), and Skunk Slushie (Hybrid) — is a good example of what a well-curated concentrate menu looks like.

Rechargeable Vape Pens

A step up in value, rechargeable pens use replaceable cartridges. The Blue Dream Disposable Vape Pen (Hybrid, 90% THC) and the Lemon Haze Rechargeable THC Vape (Sativa, 90% THC) illustrate the difference: disposables are convenient for occasional users, while rechargeable options are more economical for regular use.

THC Drinks

An often-overlooked concentrate category, THC-infused drinks deliver cannabinoids in liquid form with a more measured, social-friendly experience. The Zativa Mojito THC Mocktail (30mg THC, 0% alcohol) and Zativa Rum & Raspberry THC Drink (15mg THC) are good starting points — especially for those who prefer not to inhale anything.

Sativa, Indica, and Hybrid: What's the Difference in Concentrates?

The same strain-type logic that applies to flower also applies to concentrates. Understanding this helps you choose more intentionally:

Some users report that Sativa-dominant concentrates like Durban Poison or Ghost Train Haze feel more energising, while Indica options like Banana OG or London Pound Cake may support a more restful evening. These are user-reported tendencies — individual responses vary significantly. Cannabis affects everyone differently, and no outcome is guaranteed.

THC Percentage: What the Numbers Mean

When you see "90% THC" on a vape cartridge, that refers to the concentration of THC in the extract itself — not the amount you'll consume per puff. Context matters:

• A 2g cartridge at 90% THC contains approximately 1,800mg of THC total
• A single controlled puff typically delivers a fraction of that
• For comparison, a pre-roll like the Banana Kush Pre-Roll (Indica, 21% THC) delivers far less THC per use

Start low. Go slow. This is the single most important principle for beginners using concentrates. Wait to feel the effects before using more — especially with high-potency vapes.

Why Lab Testing Matters

Any reputable cannabis product should come with verifiable lab testing. Lab tests confirm:

• Actual THC/CBD content (not just a marketing claim)
• Absence of pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants
• Terpene profiles where applicable

When browsing any cannabis store — including our store — look for products that reference lab-tested content. Unverified potency claims are a red flag. Your health is not a marketing experiment.

Red Flags to Avoid

Whether you're buying in Sandton, Fourways, Rosebank, or anywhere else in Johannesburg, watch out for these warning signs:

• No lab testing or potency verification — you have no idea what you're actually consuming
• No age verification — any platform selling cannabis without age checks is operating irresponsibly
• Unverified sellers on social media — no accountability, no recourse if the product is unsafe
• Unrealistic pricing — concentrates have real production costs; extremely cheap options often signal poor quality or unsafe extraction
• No discreet packaging — a responsible seller protects your privacy
• Pressure tactics or exaggerated health claims — no cannabis product "cures" or "treats" anything; treat such claims as immediate red flags

Green Vault uses discreet packaging, secure online card payment in ZAR, and mandatory age verification. These aren't optional extras — they're the baseline standard.
