What Is Zol? Ganja, Kush and South African Weed Slang Explained
By Green Vault Editorial Team · Published 2026-09-30
Quick Answer
Zol is South African slang for a hand-rolled joint, and more loosely for weed itself. Dagga is the older South African word, from the Khoikhoi dachab, ganja comes from Hindi, and kush is a family of indica strains named after the Hindu Kush mountains. Green Vault sells pre-rolls and flower online to adult members across South Africa.
Zol is South African slang for a hand-rolled joint, and more loosely for weed itself. The Dictionary of South African English lists it as a hand-rolled cannabis cigarette, as cannabis in general, and in older use as a hand-rolled tobacco cigarette. If you are in Joburg and looking for zol, our weed dispensary Johannesburg page explains how Green Vault's online store and delivery work, and our ready-rolled joints are in the pre-rolls collection.
What does zol mean?
Zol means a joint, usually a hand-rolled one, and people also use it to mean cannabis in general, as in "have you got zol?". It is one of the most widely used South African words for weed, heard across the country from Joburg to Cape Town.
The Dictionary of South African English (DSAE) gives three senses:
- A hand-rolled cannabis cigarette, or a twist of paper holding enough cannabis to roll one.
- Cannabis itself.
- A hand-rolled tobacco cigarette, often in brown paper.
Green's Dictionary of Slang adds that a zol can also mean roughly the amount of cannabis needed to roll one joint. Both dictionaries record the word in South African writing from the 1940s, and both say its origin is unknown. A similar word was used in Mexico in the 1950s, but nobody has shown a link between the two.
Today most people use zol for a joint of weed, and sometimes for weed generally. Related words you might hear are "zol monkey" or "zol rooker" for someone who smokes a lot.
What does dagga mean, and where does the word come from?
Dagga is the long-standing South African word for cannabis. It is the everyday Afrikaans and South African English name for the plant and the dried buds, and it is still the word used in many official and legal documents.
The word comes from the Khoikhoi word dachab, which early settlers at the Cape took into South African Dutch, and later Afrikaans. Written records of it go back to the 1600s: a 1670 English account of Africa already mentions "a powerful Root, which they call Dacha". Over the centuries it was spelled dacha, dakka, dacca and daga before settling on dagga, pronounced with a guttural "g", like the Afrikaans "g" in "goed".
So when someone searches for dagga, zol or weed in Johannesburg, they are looking for the same thing.
What does ganja mean?
Ganja is another word for cannabis, especially the flowering buds used for smoking. It comes from Hindi and Urdu gānjā, meaning hemp or hemp flower buds, which goes back to the Sanskrit gañjā. Merriam-Webster records it in English from 1689.
The word travelled widely and is strongly linked with Jamaica and Rastafari culture. In South Africa it is used alongside dagga and zol with the same meaning.
What is kush weed?
Kush is a family of cannabis strains named after the Hindu Kush mountains, which run through Afghanistan and Pakistan, where these plants come from. Kush strains are usually indica or indica-leaning, with short, bushy plants and dense buds, and they are often described as earthy, piney or sweet.
Well-known kush lines include OG Kush and Hindu Kush, and many modern hybrids carry "kush" in their names because one of their parents was a kush strain. Over time "kush" also became general slang for good weed, so you will hear it used loosely too.
At Green Vault, King Kush Breath is listed in our product data as an indica. Like all our flower, it is grown on our own farms and organically grown. Its strength and price are shown live on the product page.

What other slang words are used for weed in South Africa?
South Africa has a long list of names for cannabis, from Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa and international slang. Here are the ones you are most likely to hear:
| Word | What it means | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Zol | A joint, usually hand-rolled; also weed in general | South African slang, origin unknown |
| Dagga | Cannabis, the plant or the dried buds | Afrikaans, from Khoikhoi dachab |
| Boom | Dagga | Afrikaans for "tree"; old prison and street slang |
| Skyf | A joint, a hand-rolled cigarette, or a puff of one | From Afrikaans skuif, a pull on a pipe |
| Insangu / intsangu | Dagga | isiZulu insangu, isiXhosa intsangu |
| Ganja | Cannabis, especially buds | Hindi and Urdu, from Sanskrit |
| Kush | A family of indica strains; also slang for good weed | Named after the Hindu Kush mountains |
| Weed | Cannabis | International English slang |
| Pre-roll | A joint sold ready-rolled | Retail term |
| Bud or flower | The dried flowering part of the plant | International |
A few words need care. Skyf can mean a tobacco cigarette as well as a joint, so context matters. Entjie is sometimes mixed up with weed slang, but it means the end of a cigarette, a stompie, not cannabis.
Is a zol the same as a pre-roll?
Mostly, yes. A zol is a joint, and a pre-roll is a joint that is sold ready-rolled so you do not have to roll it yourself. The only real difference is that "zol" usually suggests something rolled by hand at home, while "pre-roll" is the shop word.
Green Vault's pre-rolls are king size, 1.2g each, rolled from flower grown on our own farms. If you would rather roll your own zol, you can buy the same flower by the gram in our flower collection.
