Sativa vs Indica vs Hybrid: A Beginner's Guide for Johannesburg

That is the short version of sativa vs indica, but the labels are only a rough guide: THC strength and aroma matter just as much. What is sativa?

Sativa is one of the two main types of cannabis plant. Sativa weed is usually described as uplifting, energetic and head-focused, which is why many people choose it for the daytime or social settings.

The name comes from Cannabis sativa, the name the botanist Carl Linnaeus gave the plant in 1753. Sativa plants tend to be tall and thin, with long, narrow leaves, and they take longer to flower. They traditionally come from warm regions close to the equator. South Africa's best-known local strain, Durban Poison, is a classic sativa.

People who choose sativa often describe:

• Feeling more alert, chatty or creative.
• A lighter feeling in the body.
• A better fit for earlier in the day than late at night.

These are descriptions, not promises. A high-THC sativa can still feel like a lot for someone new, so start small.

What is indica?

Indica is the other main type of cannabis plant. Indica weed is usually described as relaxing, calm and body-focused, which is why many people save it for the evening at home.

The name Cannabis indica was given by the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck in 1785. Indica plants are short and bushy, with broad, dark leaves, and they flower more quickly. Many come from the dry, mountainous Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is where kush strains get their name.

• A heavier feeling in the body.
• A better fit for winding down than for a busy day.

What is hybrid weed?

Hybrid weed is a cross between sativa and indica plants, and most strains sold today are hybrids. Breeders cross strains to combine traits such as flavour, yield and effect, so a hybrid can lean towards the sativa side, lean towards the indica side, or sit balanced in the middle.

The main difference between sativa and indica is how the plants grow and how people describe the experience. Sativa plants are tall and thin and are usually described as uplifting; indica plants are short and bushy and are usually described as relaxing.

Are sativa and indica labels accurate?

They are useful, but not exact. Research on commercial cannabis has found that the sativa and indica labels do not reliably match what is in the plant.

A 2021 study in Nature Plants found that sativa- and indica-labelled samples were genetically indistinct overall, and that the labels lined up mainly with a small number of aroma compounds. A 2022 study in PLOS ONE of nearly 90,000 commercial samples found that the indica, sativa and hybrid labels "do not consistently align" with the chemical make-up of the products.

What that means for you:

• Treat the label as a starting point, not a guarantee.
• Look at THC strength, which has a bigger say in how strong something feels.
• Pay attention to aroma. If a strain smells good to you, that is worth noting.
• Remember what you liked. The most reliable guide is your own experience with a specific strain.

What are terpenes, and why do they matter?

Terpenes are the natural compounds that give cannabis its smell and taste, and they are a big part of why two strains with the same label can feel different. The same compounds are found in many plants, from citrus to pine trees.

The 2021 study above linked the indica label with more myrcene and the sativa label with other terpenes, which may be part of why the labels feel meaningful to people even though the genetics are mixed.

Sativa, indica or hybrid: which format should you choose?

Which should a beginner in Johannesburg choose?
